for the record

while i think it does say something about the growth of our country since the 1950s that americans were willing to vote an african-american as president, i would just like to state that i voted for obama because i thought he was the best man for the job. skin color didn't even make the list of considering factors. and i think that's how the great and fearless dr. king would have wanted it. (since so many spoke of him in heaven yesterday).

as for the inauguration, you can't go wrong with iztak perlman, yo-yo ma and "simple gifts." i liked the poem. the benediction was a little long, but definitely energizing (and silly) at the end. my favorite part was the end of president obama's speech.

"So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:
'Let it be told to the future world ... that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet (it).'
America, in the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations."

God. Bless. America.

April...that was totally my second favorite part and I almost posted that with the painting of the Crossing of the Delaware.

I'm so glad you were inspired too! {And Grace...I love it).

Do you think they'll sell that performance on itunes??

Good comments April, I like what you said. I too think Obama gave a great speech. I also agree with you on Perlman and Ma and their music, it sounded so wonderful in a special occasion like that. Ditto to the benediction, it was way too long!!

April - you always share such great stuff on your blog! I missed you, so welcome back. The inauguration was wonderful, for so many reasons. And thanks for giving an "Annie" celebration, because her photography is simply splendid and deserves glory, laud and honor. I'd better get going on Twin Peaks so I'll be ready - you're ahead of me!

quotables

"is that lily holding baby lily?" -lily's response when i showed her a picture of gracie holding her when lily was a baby.

"drama class is actually a lot of fun." -gracie (this is only humorous in that grace seemed surprised by how much she likes drama class. this from my child who we refer to as "a drama queen" when she is not around.)

"mom, you can go with my teacher and i'll stay home with japie and evan. daddy can go to work, and i'll be the mommy" -lily, in response to learning that she would be going to preschool next year instead of this year.

"mom, if you don't get rid of that smell soon, you're going to have to buy a new car." -gracie when it took me a couple of days to clean out my car after returning from a road trip.

"mommy, they have dress-ups for you!" -lily while walking by the prom dress section at macy's.

"i said the prayer "last"-erday." -lily's replacement word for "yesterday."
