trick or treat

introducing....

mary poppins

mary poppins (who lost her parasol at the second halloween party we attended the tuesday before halloween and before mom ever got a picture) in the carousel dream-like sequence

...and the train engineers.

i liked this decoration at one of the houses we trick or treated.

things you would have heard if you went trick or treating with us:
  • "say thank you" to which fritz would say "your welcome" at almost every door.
  • "how does fishnet stockings and high heels constitute as a costume?" this was answered when i overheard the girl tell someone at one door that she was "britney spears."
  • me having way too much fun with the train whistle that accompanied the boys' costumes.
  • lily asking after only a block if we could go home because she had enough candy. (this made me happy until she's begged twice today to go trick or treating again.)
  • the girls saying things like: "candy, get your candy here" to all the passerby trick-or-treaters and fritz echoing their every phrase.

other thing i learned this week was that you can't be cheap and add food coloring to chocolate squares. i learned this when i made these (only the pumpkins w/green stems) for gracie's class. luckily, kids like to eat candy no matter how nicely spread the chocolate is and orange sugar sprinkles do a pretty good job of covering the bumps. oh, and i also learned it's very hard to find a white sunhat when it's not easter time. we finally ended up spray painted one of my mom's straw hats white for gracie's costume.

I love the boys costumes -with the wheelchair a train. That is great- the girls look cute too. Looks like you had a good Halloween. That is funny about Lily wanting to go everyday now.

I love the Mary Poppins costumes! Where did you get them - or did you make them?

I heart the Mary Poppins costumes. Who wanted to be Mary first?

@scrappycook and nat - lily decided last halloween that she wanted to be mary poppins. i thought it was such a cute idea that i kept occasionally reminding her throughout the year. i found that hat at my parents' house over the winter and asked if i could have it. the coat and dress (which lily is wearing inside out), i luckily found on sale at gymboree a month ago. we were struggling with what grace should be (we try to do family themes). so a month ago, i suggested mary poppins from the carousel and grace liked the idea. (i was a chimney sweep at one of the parties we went to). i made grace's skirt and had the hardest time finding a easter-like hat this time of year and so ended up spray painting one of my mom's old hats. i painted and pat added the details to jake's train.

@stace - pat's parents have always had an irrigation system for their garden and grape vineyard. (i think it's a western thing.) anyhoo, they lived away from that house for about 20 years and i think their garden this year was big enough to get it all working again.

i LOVE the mary poppins ideas. they look great. my girls were done by the time we got down one street. i figured, hey, less candy! so we went home! to satisfy their totreat craving, they've been knocking on each other's bedroom doors pretending.

April, quite honestly I think you're the most amazing mom I've ever personally known. Those costumes were just fantastic. Thanks for sharing them with all of us who weren't lucky enough to be on your trick-or-treat route!

quotables

"is that lily holding baby lily?" -lily's response when i showed her a picture of gracie holding her when lily was a baby.

"drama class is actually a lot of fun." -gracie (this is only humorous in that grace seemed surprised by how much she likes drama class. this from my child who we refer to as "a drama queen" when she is not around.)

"mom, you can go with my teacher and i'll stay home with japie and evan. daddy can go to work, and i'll be the mommy" -lily, in response to learning that she would be going to preschool next year instead of this year.

"mom, if you don't get rid of that smell soon, you're going to have to buy a new car." -gracie when it took me a couple of days to clean out my car after returning from a road trip.

"mommy, they have dress-ups for you!" -lily while walking by the prom dress section at macy's.

"i said the prayer "last"-erday." -lily's replacement word for "yesterday."
